Among the most searched music streaming sites globally, SoundCloud placed second with 13.6 million searches per month on average. However, it wasn’t always easy for the Berlin-based company. What are the competitive challenges SoundCloud faces in the music streaming industry?
As a pioneer in music streaming, SoundCloud faces a unique set of challenges to maintain and grow its user base in an increasingly competitive landscape. Here are some key competitive hurdles the platform encounters:
- Dominance of Mainstream Platforms: Major players like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music dominate the market, offering extensive music catalogs, high-quality audio, and exclusive content deals, making it harder for SoundCloud to capture new listeners.
- Monetization Difficulties: SoundCloud’s freemium model has historically struggled to generate steady revenue streams compared to subscription-based competitors. Balancing free access with paid tiers while maintaining profitability is an ongoing challenge.
- Content Moderation and Quality Control: With over 250 million tracks, SoundCloud is known for its diverse content. However, ensuring quality while managing copyright and content moderation is complex, especially compared to platforms focused solely on licensed music.
- Attracting Mainstream Artists: While SoundCloud is a favorite among independent artists, attracting mainstream musicians who prefer the established reach and compensation of platforms like Spotify remains a challenge.
SoundCloud continues to innovate to overcome these challenges, but a competitive edge in music streaming requires ongoing adaptation and strategic growth initiatives.
SoundCloud Benefits to Artists and Listeners
With over 175 million listeners, we can say that SoundCloud is still an important platform for artists who want to showcase their music, receive feedback from other creators, and connect with their fanbase. Meanwhile, listeners also benefit from using SoundCloud not just because of the free streaming service but also because of the wide range of music tracks they can discover on the platform. Also, you can always go for a paid subscription if you want to take advantage of the more advanced features and tools found on the site.
Overall, SoundCloud is both for musicians and music lovers. With a new CEO in position—Michael Weissman—it is still hard to tell whether the company will be able to continue its winning streak. In the meantime, there are literally millions of music tracks still left to be enjoyed and discovered on SoundCloud.

Hello, I wanted leave a comment about SoundCloud. I am a new artist and growing at a fast rate; however, I seem to get blocked. I started 108 days ago and have finished my 318th track but I am NOT monetizing or Reposting at this point. What I am getting at is if you monetize a song it can be tracked on how many plays and maybe earn some money. Since I am NOT monetizing I only get counts from people that follow me and anyone who doesn't follow me can listen to a song 100 times and I would never know, but lately I have found out I am NOT even getting counts from people that do.. I have respectfully wrote a few messages with no replies back. I really would like to get my counts so I can gauge my followers likes and dislikes... I am a freestyler, no script writing guy. I am 39 years old and music has ALWAYS been there for me and I want my first 500 song to be free! I am just disappointed in the way I am being treated and I am bring more people to SoundCloud but I am pushed aside. I have lived one heck of a life and have plenty more tracks to make.. I like the platform but I am very close to packing it up and going to YouTube Music.. SoundCloud has a weekly new artist channel and I seem I am frustrating a bunch of people by posting a new track everyday. I feel the music industry is shifting again and most people like something new and fresh rather then listen to the same song, so that's where I stepped in 108 days ago. I have never wanted to rap, song or become a artist but 108 days ago something pushed me to go buy the gear. I will make 2500 songs and I am at 318 but 194 are posted under Sandman Midwest and 50 have rejected by SoundCloud for copyright issues but I am note monetizing or reposting "distribute" so there should legally be no issue. I have a BS in Law MS in Electrical and have died 6 times and thank G O D for still being 100% after every time.. Call it venting..IDK I feel I am being profiled. Anyone that has taken a listen to a few have like one of A LOT of them. Why am I being pushed aside? Why will so many REALLY account people post messages on other peoples songs saying good or bad comments and I only get comments from my followers. I will say these bots that post a message on a song to get you to buy fake plays or followers should be shut DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have tested 3 of the online comments that do this and all of the accounts are fake which gives false numbers like what you have posted above! Thank and my apologies. Brad Sandvig AKA Sandman
keep at it, it takes a long time to get Soundcloud followers, you sound like you have been productive but dont give up
