Credit Card Rewards: A Guide to Helping You Find the Card That Best Fits Your Needs

credit cardBuilding credit can be rough. I have trouble even using my credit card because I am so forgetful that I know making payments on time will be an issue. Unfortunately, good credit is very important to functioning in the real world. From renting an apartment to being trusted by your cable company, you need good credit. There’s no time like the present to start building up your credit, but if you’re like me and need an extra push to swipe your card I’ve got good news. There are tons of cards out there with great incentives to get you spending, and I’ve picked out some of the best.

Travel rewards

I cannot think of a better reason to spend money on my credit card and pay it off than free flights. There are a lot of cards out there that offer travel incentives with just one airline and that have a lot of blackout dates. That’s why Capital One’s Venture Rewards card is my favorite. With this card you can book flights on any airline with no blackout dates, there is no limit to the miles that you can earn, and there are no foreign transaction fees when you spend abroad. You’ll deserve a vacation after building such great credit anyway, why not let your credit card itself reward you?

Gas and grocery rewards

Looking for a card to help you hold down the household finances? American Express’ Blue Cash Everyday card is perfect because of the cash back rewards. This card offers 3% cash back on supermarket purchases, 2% cash back on gasoline purchases, 2% cash back from department store purchases, and 1% on other purchases. So whether you’re feeding your kids, driving long distances to work, or shopping for new clothes, all purchases are a win. This card has very practical rewards, especially if you have a family.

The safe card

Discover’s Discover it card is a really safe option for a first time credit card user. There is no annual fee, no over limit fee, no foreign transaction fee, and no late fee on your first late payment—which is the best if you are forgetful like me! Plus, if your card is stolen you’re protected from paying for any purchases that you did not make yourself.

A card for the sports fanatic

NFL extra points credit card is great for—who else?—the sports fan. First of all, it lets you put the shield of your favorite team right on the card so that everyone can know you are the most loyal of fans. In addition to low interest and a great points rewards system, this card gives you a 20% discount on any purchase from and you earn 2 points for every $1 spent on NFL team purchases. If you’re big into sports this card has great rewards.

Reward yourself with the happiest place on earth

Planning to take your family on a vacation to Disney? The Disney Rewards Visa card is a great way to earn rewards toward a trip! You start earning from the get-go with this card, with a $50 Disney gift card after your first purchase. You can redeem your points for theme park tickets, resort stays, DVDs, toys, and other Disney goodies with these rewards. Plus, you can get a chance to attend a meet’n’greet at a park with your family’s favorite Disney characters. The card is adorable as well, allowing you to choose a Disney-themed design.

Building good credit isn’t easy, it takes responsibility and motivation. If you need extra incentive these cards are great! Don’t forget to stay on top of your payments though; sometimes the incentives can be misleading.
