Cheap Winter Vacations: A Guide to 5 Winter Destinations

caribbean cruiseIt’s cold, it’s dark, it’s snowing, and it’s miserable. It’s time to save yourself from the winter gloom. Looking for a winter getaway with a budget? Look no further.

Puerto Rico

I am always amazed at how cheap flights to Puerto Rico are if you do a little research. Depending on where you are flying from, I’ve seen roundtrip flights for less than $200. Once you get there finding cheap things to do, cheap hotels or hostels, and cheap food is also very doable—check out this Lonely Planet page for advice. You don’t have a passport? Don’t worry. Since Puerto Rico is a US territory you don’t need to fork over any extra money for travel documentation. Essentially, with such cheap prices and easy access, you can just get up and go. Right now.

Salt Lake City

When I think “dream vacation” I don’t usually think “Utah”—unless of course I am thinking epic mountains and winter wonderland. If you’re trying to get away to shred up some snow on a ski vacation Salt Lake City is definitely one of the more budget-friendly places to look into. Ranging from hotels to lift tickets, Salt Lake resorts are way cheaper than anything that you could find at a ritzy place like Aspen or Vail. If you’re not into skiing or snowboarding there are also tons of great winter activities in the area for the whole family.

Phoenix

There is a reason that so many people go to Phoenix to retire, and the reason is that it is warm. Plane tickets are generally cheap too! There are also tons of things to do in Phoenix, from museums to horseback riding you’ll never be bored should you choose to visit. Check out Trip Advisor’s list of 111 things to do while you’re in town!

New York City

New York isn’t warm, but if you’ve been dying to go it is definitely cheaper in the winter. The famous attractions of NYC are definitely a must-see, but if a warmer summer trip isn’t in your budget and you’re willing to bundle up you’ll find that plane tickets and hotels are much cheaper in the winter.

Caribbean Cruise

A great cruise deal can sometimes yield the most bang for your buck—and deals are not hard to find! CruiseCheap.com lists cruises to the Bahamas for as little as $179, which is a killer deal considering everything that a cruise includes. Many cruise deals are get-up-and-go as well, so if you’re looking for something right now you may even be able to find a better deal than if you were to plan ahead. Warm seas are in your near future.
