Pros and Cons of Grow BI: A Business Intelligence Solution for the Power User

Category: B2B News

Grow Business Intelligence is a product that’s basically designed to help businesses consolidate all of the data they need from a variety of sources. It’s one of the few apps that can pull data from a wide variety of sources, which makes it one of the more interesting players in this category.

Grow BI dubs itself as “Your Business Command Center”, which is a pretty big deal; this means that the vendor’s very confident in its ability to provide small to medium businesses with the data they need to grow, as it were, their business exponentially.

As you read on, you will be introduced to some of the advantages of using Grow BI, and some of the key disadvantages to using this app, if any. This will hopefully give you a good idea of what to expect from using this vendor for your business in the future.

Key Advantages

Some of the best advantages of using Grow BI are the following:

  • A wide variety of data integration.
  • Focused dashboards for a variety of needs
  • Customizable analytics
  • Collaboration-centric user interface
  • Hundreds of pre-built reports

It looks like the main focus of Grow BI is in the amount of data they can pull for your business, and presenting said data to users in a neat and efficient manner. Advantages of Grow BI

As mentioned earlier, the biggest pro of Grow BI is the fact that it consolidates a lot of information into multiple dashboards. This might sound like a gross oversimplification, but that’s exactly what users are after in an app like this.

But aside from being able to provide plenty of data, being able to choose which data you want to show, and converting these into easy to understand reports is also a plus. After all, what’s the point of having all that data when you can’t understand what it’s for? This is also one of the services provided by Grow BI, and it adds plenty of value to their overall product.

Wide Variety of Data

One of the most important things about any BI software is that it has to be able to pull in plenty of data. Some of the standard BI tools just pulls data from data warehouses, which is the backbone of all BI apps. But Grow takes this basic function, and expands it exponentially, adding multi-application integration into the mix, and some social media connectivity too, for good measure.

For example: Grow BI can connect to a variety of SaaS products, including but not limited to Salesforce and Zendesk. It can also connect to various databases and libraries, which means you can pull data from your accounting tools, HR administration apps, and even your Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Focused Dashboards for a Variety of Needs

If you’re going to use Grow BI as your main business intelligence tool, then it stands to reason that you will be pulling in a variety of data—not just customer data. That means if you can’t arrange your data neatly, you’re likely to get lost in all the information you’ll have to sift through.

This is why Grow BI added their various dashboards. It makes it easier to concentrate similar and interrelated data together. If you’re head of the sales and marketing department, for example, having a sales leaderboard will concentrate all of the data your salespeople have provided into a singular dashboard. It can help you identify who among your people are performing well, who isn’t, and why.

The same goes for the other departments of your company. Finance can have their own dashboard, and marketing as well. The list goes on, and it gets pretty specific depending on your current needs.

Customizable Analytics

If Grow BI can create set dashboard based on the data you’re pulling, you can also use it to create a customized dashboard for your own personal use. This means you can cross reference a variety of data that you regularly review into one personalized dashboard.

A good example of this would be when department heads and HR have to cross reference employee performance versus the quarterly budget, when deciding whether to retrench or hire new employees. Mixing together some of the data from the HR dashboard with some of the data from the financial dashboard can give you a better idea of whether an employee should be relieved of his post, or not.

Collaboration-centric User Interface

While your rank and file may not have much of a use for Grow BI (although they still can), your supervisors, managers, and partners will. This means that you and your team will regularly collaborate over the data included in Grow BI.

The vendor made this easier by making the UI easy to learn, easy to navigate, and easy to understand. Some individual user reviews have gone on to state that the UI of Grow BI is intuitive, and it’s easy to generate custom analytics without the help of an IT specialist.

Hundreds of Pre-built Reports

While we’re on the topic of custom analytics, it would be best to mention that Grow BI also provides hundreds of pre-built reports for its users. This means that aside from being able to customize the data you include into your dashboard, you can also customize the reports you get on your dashboard via one of the many reporting templates provided by the app.

Some of the examples provided by Grow BI on their website includes reports on the total value of open deals, deal breakdowns by status, employee retention for the month and for the quarter, among others. The provider states that they have around 300 templated reports in their libraries, which means that there’s a comprehensive number of reports that you can generate for your managers, your stakeholders, and your clients.

Disadvantages of Grow BI

There are a couple of things that you will need to take note of with Grow BI. Note that these are fairly minor details, and most users generally gloss over them, focusing on the general pros of the app.

Not All Integrations Work Seamlessly

This is perhaps something that the Grow BI team is consistently working on. Some of the integrations don’t work seamlessly. Whereas most of the data is pulled automatically, some avenues need to be refreshed manually in order to ensure that the data available is the newest.

One such example of this disadvantage is the app’s integration with Slack. There have been isolated user reports that Grow BI doesn’t automatically pull data from Slack DBs, which can be frustrating for some individuals.

The UI Could Stand Some Tweaking

While the UI of Grow BI is intuitive enough for a good majority of its users, there are some glaring issues that some might find troublesome. These include some issues with the font size and color. A few users have commented that the font size and color could use a little bit of adjustment to make it easier on the eyes.

But that’s mostly a cosmetic issue. The second UI issue involves a usability issue that, while not incredibly important, could improve the whole user experience as a whole. Some users have stated that there are no sparklines when you hover over some points in data graphs. The addition of these sparklines can make it easier to interpret graphical data.

On the whole, Grow BI seems to be able to provide users with what they promise. This is a pretty good solution for the consolidation of business intelligence, and can be very instrumental in getting your entire management team on one page.

Note that this application is designed for the use of agencies and small to medium enterprises, so if you’re a big business, then you may want to consult with Grow BI on how they can be of help.
