How many mobile apps were available for downloads in leading app stores in 2019?
In 2019, there were almost 6 million mobile apps available for download in leading app stores: Google Play with 2,570,000 mobile apps, Apple App Store with 1,840,000, Windows Store with 669,000, and Amazon Appstore with 489,000.

For every mobile phone, there are at least a handful of apps pre-installed in it. These mobile apps are a necessity for mobile phone users. In a previous article published by FinancesOnline.com, the number of smartphone users was projected at 3.5 billion by the end of 2020 and 3.8 billion by the end of 2021. As the number of smartphone users skyrockets, the demand for mobile apps will surely follow.

This article will explore the number of available apps in leading app stores, and will go into the main categories below:

Smartphone Users in the World

In a previous article published by Finances Online, smartphone users were projected to hit 3.3 billion. As of December 2019, the Android operating system dominates the market with a total share of 74.13%, followed by iOS with 24.79%[1].

User Engagement

With the increasing number of mobile users around the world, it is expected that the number of mobile downloads will likewise grow. In 2017, the number of mobile downloads in the world was reported to be at 140.68 billion. However, 2018 saw the biggest growth of almost 27% from the previous year with 192.45 billion mobile downloads. In 2019, the total mobile downloads reached 204 billion[2].

A 2019 study identified what apps have the highest install rate and user base growth. Games (mid-core) recorded the highest install rate and user base growth with an 18.53 growth index score. The emergence of the ride-hailing app as an industry impacted the growth of mobile downloads for related apps. The reported numbers for ride-hail and taxi apps are at 17.63. Games and sports are at 15.07. The fourth spot belongs to video and streaming at 12.34% and dating at fifth at 11.28%. The bottom three are banking at 3.8, social network at 2.29, and news at 2.11 respectively[3].

A newly downloaded mobile app is cool—going through its features gives you a profound sense of adventure, especially if you don’t like to go outside that much. But like other shiny things, its appeal is doomed to fade as new competition appears. According to Localytics, the average retention rate for an app on its first month of download is at 43% and the churn rate is at 57% as of 2018. Moreover, as time passes by, retention rates decrease. In month two, the average retention rate is 33% and the churn rate is 67%. In month three, only 29% of apps survive the culling and 71% get uninstalled[4].

As first mentioned above, there were almost 6 million mobile apps available for download in leading app stores. And with over a billion times these apps are downloaded by unique smartphone users, you cannot avoid wondering how many times a user launches an app installed in their mobile devices. In another study by Localytics, they found that, on average, an app is launched 13 times a day.

Adding to that, research by eMarketer showed that an average American spends two hours and forty-three minutes per day using mobile apps[5].

Growth of Available Apps in Leading App Stores

As churn rates coming from smartphone users continuously increase, app developers are obliged to create something new over and over again to keep the interest of their market. According to Appfigures, as of the last quarter of 2019, there was a 4.07% growth on the number of mobile apps available for download in Google Play Store. They are followed by the Apple App Store with 2.2%, and Amazon App Store with 0.4%[6].

If you look into the fine print, the growth of available apps in leading app stores can also be observed through various categories. In the Google Play Store, uncategorized apps grew at about 26.67%; Dating apps placed second with 14.88%; The third spot belongs to auto and vehicles 10.64%; Events in fourth with 10% and fifth is shopping with 8.98%. At the same time, categories that showed negative growth are games with -1.79%, weather with -1.85%, video players and editors with -2.11, and photography at -5.59%[7].

In the Apple App Store, uncategorized apps saw a larger growth of about 88.22%. Shopping came second with 5.99%, utilities at third with 5.13%, productivity placed fourth with 4.18%, and food and drink with 3.81% in fifth place. Apps that showed negative growth were photography with -0.32%, followed by books with -1.34%, stickers with -3.53%, and news at -9.31%[8].

The third leading app store, Amazon App Store, saw the least amount of growth across all app categories. Uncategorized apps lead with 6.44%. They are followed by movies and TV at 2.48%. Photo and video are at the third spot with 2.08%. Business and utilities hold the fourth and fifth spots with 1.61% and 1.21% each. Though they showed the least amount of negative growth compared to other app stores, more categories were listed on the red. Reference showed the least amount of negative growth with -0.26%. Kids followed with -0.38%, news at -0.51%, novelty at -0.52%, magazines with -0.52%, and books and comics -0.84%[9].

In the last quarter of 2019, the data gathered from Google Play Store showed that the top category is gaming with 8.59 million downloads. Tools came in second with 1.37 million. Communication tied with social both at 1.08 million and entertainment with 998 million[11].

Similarly, the Apple App Store’s data showed that their top category based on download volume is also gaming with 2.33 million. Photo and video placed second with 586 million. Entertainment apps with 534 million downloads made them the third most popular category. Shopping and utilities hold the fourth and fifth spots with 496 million and 483 million, respectively[12].

In another study by Appfigures and Statista, they identified the most popular categories in Google Play Store based on the share of available apps. Gaming remains the most popular category with a 13.35% share from the total number of available apps ready for download. Education placed second with a total share of 8.95%. They are followed by the business category with 6.89%. Lifestyle placed fourth with 5.97%, and entertainment in fifth place with 5.88%[13].

PocketGamer.biz conducted a separate study to focus on finding out the most popular categories in the Apple App Store based on the share of available apps. They reported that gaming is also the top category but with a much higher share compared to its Android counterpart with 22.37%. Business followed by 10.12%. Education placed third with 8.68%. Lifestyle and utilities subsequently placed on the fourth and fifth spots with 8.62% and 5.9%, respectively[14].

Leading App Stores in China

The country with the biggest population of smartphone users, China, has limited access to foreign websites. The population of smartphone users in China was over 700 million in 2018, according to a report by Statista[15]. Because of this, their online activity piques the interest of many mobile app developers. According to Statista, there are 4.49 million apps available for download across all app stores in China[16].

In a study conducted by iiMedia Research in 2018, they found out that 40.3% of respondents prefer 360 Mobile Assistant. Making it the top choice as the third-party app store in China. Tencent MyApp falls second with 24.4%, Baidu Mobile Assistant in third with 19.5%, and Alibaba App Store in fourth place with only 11.1%.

In a more recent study conducted by AppInChina in 2019, the number of Android app stores in China increased. Their market share underwent a shift too. In just a matter of a year, Tencent MyApp clinched the number one spot from 360 Mobile Assistant with a reported market share of 26.03%. 360 Mobile Assistant, on the other hand, fell a few spots and is now fourth with a significant drop from 40.3% to 9.71%. Huawei App Market holds the second spot with 12.76%, and Oppo Software Store follows with 12.35% in the third spot. Baidu Mobile Assistant fell one spot and is now in fifth place with 9.15%. Notably, Alibaba—dubbed as the Amazon of China—and its mobile app store’s market share fell significantly in popularity and didn’t appear in the study.

There’s no such thing as free lunch. Don’t be fooled by these ‘free-to-download’ apps. Yes, in a sense, they are free but when you look at it closely, most of these ‘free’ apps require in-app purchases for full access. In other cases, they mine your data and sell it to third-party entities as payment. Those are only a few methods how developers make a profit in the mobile apps industry.

In a report by iResearch, the total revenue of mobile apps in 2018 was at $365.2 billion. These numbers consist of in-app advertising and paid app revenue. They also predicted that the total revenue of mobile apps will hit $581.9 billion in total revenue by 2020[17].

Trends To Watch Out for in the Mobile Apps Industry

Wearable devices have started to emerge. Major brands manufacturing mobile devices such as phones are also producing smartwatches and, potentially, smartglasses. These devices also need mobile apps for you to enjoy their features—a trend that is sure to make an impact soon.

Internet of things and mobile-connected devices will take over households. At the moment, smart homes are already available in the market but can cost you a fortune. With the continuous demand for innovation, it’s only a matter of time before these things become accessible to the public. From toys to domestic appliances like TVs and refrigerators, there will be a mobile app dedicated to it.

If all the predictions based on these statistics are correct, expect that the number of mobile apps available for download across all platforms will increase exponentially. And along with it, trends in the mobile app industry will surely follow.
